Down on the plot.
Harvest is slowing after the very busy summer and early autumn. Pumpkins and squash will now be curing somewhere dry ready to store over the next months. There is still plenty to do however. If you have not already done so, cut back the old canes (that have fruited) on summer fruiting raspberries and blackberries. Clear and mulch beds that have finished producing.
On a dry day, take the time to turn your compost heap to speed up decomposition. Harvest kale and perpetual spinach and chard as you need them and enjoy any cabbages you have grown over the summer months. Leeks. too are ready to enjoy over the winter months.
January and February are the perfect time of year to to prune your apple and pear trees (leave cherries and plums until warmer, drier weather in later Spring). Regular pruning keeps your trees in shape, ensures they don't get too big or encroach on paths or your neighbours' plots and ensures a good crop of fruit.
Winter is also an excellent time to clean and sharpen your tools, check nets and fleece and tidy up your allotment. Bonfires are also allowed over winter to clear any garden waste.
